Isabel Dumaa Pines Over Nostalgic Romances on New Single “Freshman Year”

Isabel Dumaa

San Francisco-raised singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Isabel Dumaa has shared a new song with the release of “Freshman Year,” a bittersweet anthem about the rush of feelings that accompany reminiscing on a past love. After the release of their debut single last year (“Call My Bluff”), it was clear the luminously voiced artist had captivated fans with her penchant for elated pop melodies and an electrifyingly cathartic lyricism. And she’s continued to wow with both on her latest single — a track that showcases the young artist’s knack for creating such ebullient anthems.

At the center of “Freshman Year” is a complicated mass of feelings. One that’s made up as much by gushing nostalgia as it is mixed in with intense longing. Across the song’s surging anthemics Dumaa tenderly but also breathlessly passes through all the memories she finds herself unable to part with. The song uncovers that exceptionally particular piece of melancholy attached to adolescence, school, and long-lost loves.

“You’ll always be / Bittersweet,” she coos against the rapid thrum of drums that erupt on the chorus. But the sense of Dumaa’s words and the song’s hopeful even triumphant medley underscores the fact that the memories are far sweeter than they are bitter. “You’ll always have a piece of the old me,” Dumaa sings.

Since she was 11 years old, Dumaa has been preparing for the events of the last few years. With two singles out the now 19-year-old singer/songwriter adds to her repertoire a growing collection of songs that reveal not just a skill for hook-filled, grandiose pop tracks but also one’s bursting with infectious emotion.

The surging crescendos of feeling that pour out of “Freshman Year” and the ecstatic electronics of “Cally My Bluff” are proof alone. More recently she even shared a video of herself covering “Home” by Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes. Keep an eye out for new music from this stellar new artist!
