Kelela has shared another preview of her upcoming album RAVEN with the release of its fifth and final single “Enough for Love,” she will also be playing at The Fonda Theater in Los Angeles on Apr. 1. The track is another willfully introspective journey inward that engages you in the form of a singular question: “Are you tough enough for love?” Like previous releases “On the Run” and “Washed Away,” her music relies on an impassioned vulnerability to impel reflection and rejuvenation.
As the penultimate song on RAVEN, the crystalline melody of “Enough for Love” carries all the sparkling atmospherics and rich resounding sonics that emanate from Kelela’s emotive creations. Against a crisp ebbing of sonorous instrumentals and bursts of electronica, she piles high her desire to be involved with someone who understands that expressing the tenderness necessary for love to survive is not a sign of weakness. Rejecting those toxic, hypermasculine perspectives the song is a luminously fervent plea for escaping all the things holding you back from being an open and honest lover — let alone a human being.
“I don’t really know why we escalate / I don’t really know why you testing me,” she sings against the song’s gorgeous melody. “Yeah you come around but you never stay.” Her words echo in the cavernous space her music creates as it reverberates outward, piercing old hurts and tugging heartstrings. “Enough for Love” espouses — as so much of Kelela’s uplifting music does — that there are few forces more powerful or more needed than expressions of empathy.
