If Los Bitchos isn’t yet on your radar then this is your wake-up call as the quartet of female instrumentalists has shared a new two-track EP Pah! (which will also be released as a 7″ this month via City Slang). It’s the first bit of new music to come since their debut record Let The Festivities Begin! which arrived last year and comes on the heels of a new tour with King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard — which will include a stop at the El Rey Theatre in Los Angeles on Apr. 20.

On Pah! the women of Los Bitchos rework two of their favorite tracks in their particularly ecstatic fashion. The first is “Trapdoor,” a song originally by their soon-to-be tour mates King Gizzard and the Wizard Lizard that the band has taken and transformed into a hazy jam of dueling guitar tones. Focusing on the repeated lyrics in the original version — which is a jittery piece of driving psych-rock — Los Bitchos have turned it into a spellbinding and hook-filled instrumental. One that traverses a wide range of moods: from its sunny beginnings that radiate warmly to its eerie drops before spiraling uncontrollably in a dizzying mess of sublime riffs.

“We love King Gizzard and ‘Trapdoor’ was a song of theirs that stood out for a cover choice,” the band said. “It was that repetitive hook of “Trapdoor, trapdoor, trapdoor” that we found so compelling and trippy. It also translates great to a guitar hook! Our version starts off feeling like a hazy summer’s day and escalates in a frantic tempo change that suggests all is not what it seems and trouble could be brewing… Hehe…”

The second song on Pah! is also a cover — one that turns the classic “Tequila” by The Champs into a rollicking and guitar-sizzling anthem. Giving it the Los Bitchos treatment the song retains plenty of its anthemic excitement as they hammer through its still recognizable melody. But the spaces in between are filled with raucous energy that nods to the cover’s origins as a live show treat dolled out by Los Bitchos at the end of their sets for the past year. So there’s a good chance this delightfully unhinged version of the song will be making an appearance on their tour this year as well!
