Jacklen Ro is back with another rousing single and music video for their new song “Self Control.” You also have a chance to see them at their first all-ages headlining show at Genghis Cohen in Los Angeles on Mar. 4! Coming off the release of their radiant sophomore album Sunshine, I’m Counting On You the duo of Jackie Giroux and Caelen Perkins have established themselves as peddlers of guitar-forward, jauntily-minded indie rock.
Now they’re back with another riff-grumbling song and a characteristically imaginative music video for “Self Control.” Against the solitary bass line that opens the song, the duo’s unique harmonies sway back and forth before being joined by a jumble of guitars and interjecting percussion. As the song’s delirium-soaked melody swells the song becomes a sing-a-long anthem about lacking any control over the way you feel — especially in the face of heartache. “You can’t control the way you feel / You’d rather run away and hide,” they sing alongside the song’s chipper rhythms. “I bet hurts way more to heal / When you’re so tangled up inside.”
Those images of being tangled up are given a literal interpretation in the music video for “Self Control,” directed by Caitlyn Phu. In it, the band is reimagined as a group of marionette dolls created by an artist for a callous puppeteer. All at once whimsical, surreal, and slightly humorous because of it — the “dolls” are forced to dance and sing until the artist makes the decision to cut their strings. Setting them free and infuriating his possible love interest a.k.a. the prickly puppeteer in the process — who then demands him to make more puppets for her — which arrive in the form of some decorative socks. As the video continues we see Jacklen Ro looking for ways to become “real,” which eventually just results in them jamming out on a grassy knoll.
