The Future of Punk is Black Women: Big Joanie Make Los Angeles Debut at the Echo

Big Joanie at the Echo by Asha Moné

“We are Big Joanie. We are A Black Feminist Punk Band. Welcome to The Black Girl Revolution !!!!”

For their first ever Los Angeles show, British punk band Big Joanie, accompanied by Fatty Cakes & the Puff Pastries, sold out the Echo for a night of bewitching sounds, adult mosh pits and last but not least: some patriarchal upsets.

Members Stephanie Phillips, Estella Adeyeri, and Chardine Taylor-Stone, made sure to play some killer tunes, “Sainted” being my favorite, as well as their rendition of Solange’s “Cranes in the Sky, but also to speak about the importance of solidarity amongst communities, creating safe spaces for Black people and how important it is to support Black punk artists.

Great music with a call to action. We Stan.
