All Things Blue — the project of India Coombs and Jon Joseph — has shared a jaunty new single with the release of “Generic Cod.” You’ll also have a chance to see them at The Moroccan Lounge in Los Angeles on June 28th opening up for Bonzie. If you haven’t yet been introduced to the dream punk duo they just released their absolutely entrancing Nothing Special EP just last year. Their music is soaked by their love for 60s analog and mesmeric psych-pop that soundtrack their incisively intimate introspections. Prior to their newest single, they shared the gritty but no less sublime confessional “Song to Myself.”

As vivaciously scrappy as ever, “Generic Cod” delivers a one-two punch of thrumming bass and frayed guitars. Over which the hypnotic cries of Coombs find ecstatic fulfillment as she weaves a sharp-tongued forewarning about settling when you think you’re already on top. “You don’t swim you just float in the pool,” she shouts. “You wouldn’t want to seem uncool / Trying is a yawn.” Like many an All Things Blue song, it gets its hooks in you via the ragged riffs and mystic atmosphere that earnestly bursts from its melody.

But “Generic Cod” also overflows with the band’s penchant for invigorating and raw songwriting. Coombs captivating with her side-winding lyricism that tries to cut through all the noise of the ego to offer up a cogent piece of advice. “You don’t know / That you could shine only if you tried,” she coos. “But you’re too scared to fail.” The alternative is no less frightening though.

As the song ends, it gets caught in an anthemic whirlpool, the duo emphatically visualize the way a boring big-shot cod might find themselves swimming in circles within the tiny pond they proudly dominate. But in reality, as Coombs howls, they’re just going “round round round and round round round” until they eventually just devour themselves.
