Jenny Lewis by Bobbi Rich

Jenny Lewis continues to tease the arrival of her new album Joy’All with the release of its latest single “Cherry Baby,” a meandering acoustic piece that drifts weightlessly amongst the psychedelic lushness of previous singles. She will also be heading out on tour this month with a stop at the KIA Forum in Los Angeles on Aug. 7. Lewis will also be playing three nights at the Hollywood Bowl on Oct. 13, 15, and 17 with The Postal Service and Death Cab For Cutie.

Coming on the heels of previous singles “Puppy and a Truck” and “Giddy Up,” the latest from Lewis offers a new angle from which to peer into the musical reinvention and emotional consolidation taking place on the record. With “Cherry Baby,” she drops the radiant melodics and rock fusion in favor of a percussive clamor of breezily enchanting rhythms and spacey atmospherics. A pervading sense of intimacy always fills Lewis’ music but here she leans into the hidden power of sonic minimalism and her own enigmatic vocal warmth.

What is familiar is the way Lewis waxes philosophical about life and love. Encasing her dreamily anxious thoughts in the subdued buoyancy of the song’s drummed-up melody and her own ethereal coos. “Life’s a mystery / We’ll just wait and see,” she meditates in a breathy voice. “If I don’t lose my mind / Get it right this time.” Against the plucky wave of drums that patter cyclically in the background, she finds herself entangled with the bittersweet necessity for love and affection. One awash in the hypnotic affectations and cathartic self-reflection that have always defined her music.
