LP Giobbi

L.A.-based artist LP Giobbi has unleashed her luminous debut album upon the world with the release of Light Places, a kaleidoscopic introduction to the “one-woman jam band.” A veritable multi-hyphenate (from DJ and producer to pianist and activist), her absorbing creations are owed to the idiosyncracies of her music background: trained as a classical pianist who leaned toward jazz in college, she had been raised with a love for the hypnotic connection created by bands like The Grateful Dead. But a seachange occurred when she started attending house shows and electrified her into trailblazing new avenues.

The results have been rapturously immediate: her live shows have taken the festival circuit by storm with their enthralling energy. Witnessing one such performance was enough to enamor Sofi Tukker (who appears throughout the album) into offering her a mentorship and record deal. Now her debut is here and it coalesces around all the radiant elements that have sustained LP Giobbi’s meteoric rise.

On its weightlessly melodic opening song “Intro: Mother” she plays a lilting warm-up that serves as a reminder that her music — no matter how anthemically dance-leaning — is grounded in the lull of piano keys. It’s followed by one of two features by Tukker on the record: the first is the enchanting and soulfully ethereal “If Love Is a Skill” and it is followed by the album’s final joyous track (minus the outro) “All My Life.”

Collaborations abound on Light Places, with LP Giobbi utilizing an eclectic mix of artists and bands to add to the album’s vibrancy. There is Los Angeles electro-pop duo Little Jet, who add their own resplendence to the spiraling shimmer of “Can’t Let You Go.” Or burgeoning singer/songwriter Caroline Byrne who appears on the scintillating beat-blitzing “All I Need” and the anthemic surges of “Feels Just Like It,” lending her invigorating vocals to both. She even taps the otherworldly and rejuvenating vocal power of Monogem for “Body Breathe,” a heart-thrumming crescendo of cathartic release that soars and stuns equally. Altogether it is a debut of sumptuous soul and impossibly transfixing, you won’t be putting it down anytime soon.
