Sasha Adrian has a talent for tugging at the heartstrings, so it should come as no surprise that her latest single “Dog” is a loving but anguished attempt to be there for a friend in need. The song also serves as a preview of the singer/songwriter’s forthcoming debut EP Token which will arrive in October via Celebration Records.
Wielding a dauntless and lucid tenderness, “Dog” sees Adrian tackling the kind of emotionally turbulent moments that aren’t often emblazoned into song. Like probing the words of a friend with an abusive father in order to piece together a version of the truth. “You don’t want me to come over,” she coos over a grumble of guitars. “’cause you want me to believe / That every night he cooks you dinner / And he asks about your school day.”
But the delusions get more and more paper thin as Adrian gently withers them away with her luminous vocals and smoldering riffs. From the lies told to cover up the sudden appearance of bruises — “The dog scratched your shoulder / You walked into a door” — to attempts at rationalizing abusive behavior as just a side-effect of alcoholism.

Written for a close friend as a tactful expression of their unyielding support, “Dog” broaches with delicate empathy the beginnings of a difficult but potentially necessary conversation. As the song ends, Adrian and her band fade sublimely into this tangle of clamorous and sizzling indie-rock that offers up a much-needed catharsis.
If you enjoyed “Dog” then you will want to dive into Adrian’s first single “Birds.” A spaciously lush and lilting ballad of heartbreak that haunts with its soft acoustic and piano caresses. One that she uses to trace the deep memories of a love that have now become deep wounds. Her gauzy and lambent vocals float like wisps of radiant light through its resonant soundscape.
