Portugal. The Man takes the stage next month at the Hollywood Bowl on Sunday, August 6th alongside two stellar Los Angeles-based bands: Chicano Batman and Say She She. Portugal. The Man has remained relevant for over a decade for two reasons: their unabashed commitment to being both genre chameleons and their passion for social activism. Traversing their massive discography means exploring all the idiosyncratic niches of sonic styles and cultural moods they’ve crammed within them.
It’s the kind of music that puts a fire in your belly, and not just because of its ecstatic classic rock moments or blending of experimental pop with hip-hop inflections. They are also a phenomenal band to see live, the kind with arena-sized anthemics powerful enough to bring the whole of the Hollywood Bowl to a rollicking frenzy.
Joining Portugal. The Man will be East Los Angeles’ own Chicano Batman, a band that melds together all the staple sounds of the city’s musical history. From nostalgia-laden R&B and soul to Latin and Afro-Cuban-infused indie-pop. Their 2010 self-titled debut is a good place to start for first listeners but their last two albums Freedom Is Free and the prescient Invisible People are also instant classics.
Opening the night will be the disco-fantasias created by the female-led trio Say She She. The shimmeringly sleek harmonies and sublime grooves make them an excellent primer for the night’s festivities. If you haven’t yet listened to their debut album Prism it is a front-to-back collection of danceable hits that bring together a globe-trotting worth of influences.
