Having been almost two years since “Gonna Bleach My Eyebrows” set the tone for what Alemeda had in store, the Ethiopian-American artist shows the value of keeping songwriting sweet and simple on her newest single, “First Love Song.”

True to the title, the song embodies a certain innocent infatuation that brings the most out of Alemeda and her ability to be brutally blunt, whether through the lyrics or titles like “Wish You The Worst.” With help from an incredibly catchy chorus, Alemeda makes it abundantly clear what kind of song “First Love Song” is while being a fun mix between 80s pop and alternative rock.
Humorously, Alemeda proclaims on the single’s chorus that it’s just a “stupid love song.” But judging by the clean production that carries a sheen quality, it’s pretty brilliant, as is proven by the shiny synths adding to the already 80s-inspired beat. The inspiration extends to the glitzy guitars, moving at the same speed as the already fast-paced drums. Unsurprisingly, Alemeda holds her own and glides right over the instruments, showcasing her dynamic voice through a vulnerability only found when singing about love.
Above all else, hearing Alemeda kicking herself in real-time for not making the first move is the kind of broad experience so many people can relate to. Though she comes from a unique upbringing, having split time between Ethiopia and Arizona, something about her music resonates universally, tastefully pulling from the past for repurposing toward a modern crowd. And with a debut EP around the corner, there should be no shortage of songs in Alemeda’s catalog continuing to do just that and then some.
