Video Age continues to offer previews of their imminent fourth album Away From the Castle with the arrival of its gleaming second single “Better Than Ever.” They’ve also announced a handful of tour dates around the record’s release including a stop at Genghis Cohen in Los Angeles on November 3rd. The new song follows the propelling rush of jangly melodies unveiled within the album’s lead single and title track “Away From the Castle.”
On their new single “Better Than Ever” the four-piece craft another energizing jammer out of a lush melding of glimmering synths and groovily grumbling guitars. At its core, the song is an ode to the friendship and collaboration inherent to the band’s stellar songwriting duo Ross Farbe and Ray Micarelli. “When I’m at the point that gets me down / You step it up, you’re better than ever,” Farbe sings in his soul-soothing croon. “There by my side, two so proud.”
“When one of us hits a wall, the other can usually clear a path. I love the storied tradition of songwriting duos in musical history” Micarelli said of their partnership. “It’s nice when someone believes in you.” Tinged in a luxuriant euphoria the track basks in the radiance of their bond as producers of such sublime melodies.

“Better Than Ever” also comes with a music video directed by Leo Rauf that follows the band as they rehearse the new song. Playing against a warmly colored backdrop that seems to mirror the track’s radiantly enveloping melodic layers, Video Age appears in their element as they jam out together. That is until their practice is interrupted by the arrival of a comically-sized synthesizer — a Buzzelli JXL — which they of course use with gusto to help finish the song.

Video Age’s discography thus far is a riveting collection of ’80s pop and new-wave that goes beyond trivial nostalgia.
Their second album Pop Therapy — a fantasia of synth-flourishes with such gems as “Lover Surreal” and “Days To Remember” — fleshed out their duo to include Nick Corson (bass guitar) and Duncan Troast (keyboards). While its follow-up Pleasure Line arrived bathed in an alluring electro-gauziness aglow with scintillating synths and gilded riffs. The dreamily twinkling “Maybe Just Once” and funky-driver “Aerostar,” as well as its irresistible title track, are all immaculate earworms.
