There couldn’t possibly be a better way to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month than spending an evening watching the 1997 biopic “Selena” at The Ford on Saturday, September 23rd. Starring Jennifer Lopez as the eponymous iconic Tejano singer the screening will also be preceded by a performance from the Los Angeles-based Selena tribute band Selenamos. Tickets for the event are currently on sale starting from $35.
Selena Quintanilla is perpetually memorialized as the “Queen of Tejano Music,” making an indelible imprint on Mexican-American music and fashion. Entire generations of artists have found themselves inspired by her revitalization of Latin music through a mingling of Tejano, cumbia, and Latin pop. One who is almost solely responsible — across the five studio albums she would release between 1989 and 1995 — for advancing that music into the American mainstream.
In many ways, her tragic and untimely death was comparable to the highs she’d roused as an artist and performer while alive. Only two years later, a biopic would further commemorate her inspiring and all-too-short life. Written and directed by Gregory Nava and starring Jeniffer Lopez in the titular role, as well as actors Edward James Olmos and Constance Marie. It would soon become synonymous with Selena’s legacy and a beautiful ode to her story.

Opening before the film screening will be Selenamos, a tribute band that will bring to life the timeless songs that Selena made famous only a few decades ago. With a reputation for being one of the best tribute bands to perform her music, they’re sure to add flair to the night’s celebration, similarly combining disco and Latin pop with stunning results. You can also expect them to play all her many, many, many hits — from “Dreaming Of You” and “Como la Flor” to “Bidi Bidi Bom Bom” — so bring your dancing shoes!
