Ships Have Sailed — duo Will Carpenter and Art Andranikyan — has joined with longtime collaborator Abby Posner to release their roaring protest song “Get Loud.” Lead by a rush of rousing vocals and electrifying rock ferocity, the song is another fiery addition to the band’s unabashedly cathartic catalog. Their latest attempts to harness the persistent rage and frustration that’s boiled over since the overturning of Roe vs. Wade by the U.S. Supreme Court — paving the way for the rescindment of reproductive rights.
“Get Loud” stomps forth as a galvanizing anthem meant to ignite and soundtrack grass-roots defiance against the evisceration of human rights. One that draws its power from the band’s passionate lyricism as much as their volcanic sonics — from its grueling riffs to its thunderous foot-stomping energy. As Carpenter howls mercilessly against those rip-roaring and twangy guitars: “No middle ground is gonna win the fight / Hold ’em down and watch the wolves bite / Sweat and blood, don’t let your guard down.”
Ships Have Sailed invited artist and producer Posner to expand the song’s perspective and sonic landscape. The track opens with her roiling vocals as she articulates her fury into a withering rallying cry. “See them knockin’ at the front door / Leavin’ me less than what I had before,” she bites. “Seein’ red, I gotta get out.” The result is a song that’s propelled by both Ships Have Sailed and Posner’s indomitable belief in standing together when the rights of many are infringed upon by a privileged and ignorant few.
“We wrote this song during a very raw and vulnerable time, and we were feeling angry, and frustrated,” Posner said of the track. “We wanted to write a song that embodied all of these complex emotions. A song that felt like a movement. When you take rights away from human beings…it gets loud, and I hope this song motivates people to get even louder.”
