A fiery trifecta of collaboration unfolds on “La Cura,” the latest single from singer/songwriter Tonina, rapper Xiuhtezcatl, and producer Sam Pine. The trio offers a rousing and soul-soothing track on which they mingle their Spanish-English lyricism with engrossing instrumentals and spacey atmospherics.
The Los Angeles-based Tonina will also be playing a hometown show at The Resident in Los Angeles on October 12th, while Xiuhtezcatl will be at The Moroccan Lounge in Los Angeles on November 6th.
On “La Cura,” the three artists join forces to create a rhythmically and soulfully anthemic track kept aloft by its dually energizing and healing melody. Produced by Pine, the song is framed by a spacious echo of rapid drums and ethereal tones over which Xiuhtezcatl raps. Delivering his hard-hitting bars over a layering of his own ecstatic cries — and later — over the ghostly croons and sighs emanating from Tonina.
“How could I / Just pretend / I’m in hell,” she sings against frantic percussion. “Every breath / A fucking fight.” Tonina’s words and voice tenderly touch the song’s vulnerable depths, grasping for respite amidst the otherworldly echoes of her lament. This bleeds right back into Xiuhtezcatl’s earnest outro as the two singers harmonize on the song’s final bars.
Tonina — who is known for weaving together Spanish, English, and Italian into her music — shines on the track. Offering her luminous and affectingly sublime vocals to “La Cura” as a bittersweet balm. While Xiuhtezcatl brings his characteristically visceral and frenetic style of hip-hop, buoying its already fiercely kinetic medleys of sound with his robust but fluid rhymes.
