Amindi Gifts Fans with a Purely Charming Mixtape Experience on “Take What You Need”

Amindi makes her return on a mixtape packed to the brim with soon-to-be hits with the release of her Take What You Need via EQT recordings. Fans will also have a chance to catch her live when she takes the stage at The Echo in Los Angeles on October 24th. Created over a period of two years the 15-song collection travails some of her favorite tracks recorded in that period — and as the title appears to suggest it encourages fans to immerse themselves with a refreshing nonchalance.

Staying true to her style of “pastel rap” — characterized by Amindi’s dense lyricism and lush melodics — the mixtape can be played chronologically or just thrown on shuffle. It recalls the days when one could just burn a bunch of earworm jams onto a CD and hit play, lending it an effortless simplicity that would make anyone nostalgic.

Take What You Need also harbors a kaleidoscopic glimpse into Amindi’s multi-faceted identity. On “taste” she takes a glance back in retrospect — “I’ve had real bad shit happen to me / But the good outweighed it gradually / and then it outweighed in drastically” — fortifying her newfound confidence with gratitude. But “lady” (feat. Chlothegod) lets that swagger swing unabashedly against the buoyant impact of concussive beats.

A bit of feel-good lo-fi is injected via the track “dopamine” (feat. Monte Booker), while the sardonically titled “diddy crop” finds Amindi ruthlessly cutting out men in her life who just don’t make the cut. Then there’s the simmering slow-burner “nightmare” (feat. Franny London), a beguiling stroll through apocalyptic dreams that’s made all the more captivating by its intoxicating atmospherics and disarming intimacy.

Some other highlights include “i thought u were different,” which punctuates Amindi’s regretful missteps in love with punchy drums and her penchant for witty lyricism — “won’t believe a word unless u cite ur source.” The ferocious “do2much” also employs pop punk-esque percussion as she burns through a track that tears into the childishness of men who “fuck it up.”
