DEBBY FRIDAY has returned with another absorbing new song with the release of “let u in,” arriving on the heels of her stellar debut album GOOD LUCK. The track was actually conceived during the Australian leg of her tour in support of the record, during which she linked with electronic music producer and vocalist Darcy Baylis. It didn’t take long for the two to find a rhythm and the result was a grippingly intimate song about acquiescing to vulnerable love.
The new single bears all the hallmarks of FRIDAY’s captivating aura: a hyper-kinetic melody of percussive beats where genres collide to form mesmeric soundscapes. On “let u in” that hypnotic relationship is sustained by a flurry of drum-and-bass as it rushes forward to punctuate her breathy confessions of affection.
“I think of you and this feeling is so heavenly,” she murmurs against a spacey backdrop of ebbing synths. “I’m wide awake, it’s the middle of the night, you see / You’re on my mind, you’re my peace and you’re my entropy.” The track’s rapid breakbeats and thrumming bass lend her tender and yearning lyricism a lovelorn earnestness.
With “let u in” FRIDAY trades her reliance on industrial sonics for a more atmospheric approach. Warming herself with an openhearted yielding to such ardent compassion and attachment. Its brooding but radiant electronica adds an ethereal layer to the fervent emotion she unveils within. And in the process reveals some of the paradoxical but eternal truths about what it means to love and be loved. “I give you up / To let you in,” she muses, before admitting: “This loving heart / My only sin.”
