Drella delivers another raucous outcry against oppressive power structures on their new single “Nothing To Lose.” See them live next month when they head on a U.K. headlining tour. The Bradford trio — comprised of Jonathan Whyatt, Toby Mitchell, and Alfie Rawlinson — continues to carve out a niche for themselves vocalizing a modern punk ethos. One that harnesses frustration and anger as a bonding element for solidarity. Their previous single “Divide” tears away the illusory partitions of society to reveal the abyss of disparity that exists between the haves and have-nots.
“Nothing To Lose” bristles with rage at the rampant blatancy with which police officers exert their brutality. “I can feel it echo through the streets,” Whyatt growls. “The cries for help and the big black leather boots of the riot police.” In the face of such tyrannical enforcement, Drella grits their teeth and delivers a withering wave of blistering sonics. Hurling themselves through a gauntlet of fiery riffs and rapturous percussion they emerge revitalizingly defiant.

However, that doesn’t mean the cycle of violence doesn’t take its toll. “When they get rough I’ll play it tough, I’ll play it tough,” they howl, before questioning: “But if push comes to shove would it ever be enough, would it be enough.” Yet it doesn’t take long for them to reaffirm that what’s at stake is far too important to not fight for. Drella offers up a searing rallying cry: “I’ve got nothing I’ve got nothing to lose / Except the chains around my ankles / Cos in the hopeless night I saw / A world that was worth fighting for.”
“The song is a social commentary on recent high-profile police failings,” Whyatt explained. “The ethos of punk music is to challenge power structures and people’s way of thinking about them. Recent incidents where the police have abused their powers or upheld problematic power structures means it is more important than ever to gaze upon their role with a critical eye.”
