Kitty Ca$h — DJ and producer Cachee Livingston — is gearing up for the release of her debut EP with the unveiling of her latest single, “Can’t Shut Us Down” (feat. PawPaw Rod). It might only be the second track she’s released as a producer, but it represents the culmination of over a decade’s worth of work she’s put into what had initially started as a hobby. Today, she counts everyone from Missy Elliot and Rihanna to Solange and even Skrillex among the big names she’s used her DJ talents for.

It all started in the early 2010s when one of Livingston’s good friends, rapper Kilo Kish, suggested she start DJing for her. She was working on “The Balancing Act” at the time, but the glitz of those early experiences forced a reckoning with her day job.

The Brooklyn native eventually took a leap of faith to pursue DJing full-time. Along the way, she naturally gravitated toward the producer role, aiding artists such as Kelela and Willow Smith in the studio or being approached by King Princess to produce remixes of their music.

When the pandemic hit it sent many DJs aground — but instead of just hunkering down waiting for live music to return, she spent that time piecing together a debut album. “Can’t Shut Us Down” arrives as the latest taste of that ecstatic collection, which will be released as two EPs sometime in 2024. It follows her previous single, “Just Fine” (feat. Kiana Ledé), which dropped back in 2021.

The track is a pulsating fireball of fiercely urgent energy, joined by Oklahoma City singer and rapper PawPaw Rod (a.k.a. Rodney Husley). One that Ca$h injects with her characteristically frenetic and infectious appetite for bass-thrumming dance anthems. You simply cannot plug into “Can’t Shut Us Down” without mesmerizing yourself with a euphoric rush of swaggering soul.

To top it off, Ca$h also shared a music video and visualizer for the new single. Directed by Tommy Nowels, it opens on a wide shot of a stunning and starkly hued desert landscape, panning downward to reveal it dotted with dirt piles like a shot straight out of the movie “Holes.” The culprit is of course, Ca$h herself, with the cinema unfolding as a series of glam shots that find her leaning seductively wearied against her handy shove — offering a sweltering visual companion to the track’s already torrid energy.
