Journey Montana has shared the latest song from her upcoming EP Stargirl with the release of “CryBaby,” a sensually forthright plea for vulnerability to validate desire. It’s the second preview she’s shared of her new project following the release of its savagely honest lead single, “Jack.” Both tracks promise another intoxicating collection from the rising R&B/soul singer.

With “CryBaby,” Journey Montana lays down the ground rules for entertaining possible love interests. As the song begins, a strident hum of strings enters alongside her lush vocals. “Cry baby, cry baby show me that you mean it / Better drop tears or I won’t believe it,” she commands with tantalizing persuasion. “Better drop tears right now or I’m leaving.”

“I like to write from a place of exaggeration,” Montana said of the single’s decisive ultimatum. “‘CryBaby’ is about wanting to torture a guy who wants you. If a guy really wants me, I want him to cry for me and show me how badly he needs me.”

But it’s not just about playing games with a possible romantic interest — as the track also dwells sweetly on the necessary levels of mutual intimacy to make a relationship work. Like “Jack,” Montana doesn’t mince words or waste a breath in articulating precisely what she wants from a man interested in her. Especially when the intensity of her love seems to outshine theirs: “So tell me who you wanna be / I don’t think I’m gettin’ what you gettin’ out of me.”

“CryBaby” also comes with a music video that channels the unguarded and emphatic vulnerability it longs for. Lounging around her home, Montana appears ensconced in its comforting surroundings as she wonders aloud whether or not she’ll be treated to the ardent affection she so obsessively desires.
