Irish-American Ali Coyle pens a cheeky love letter to the fears that thwart us on lush new single “Dreamkiller.” It’s also the first piece of fresh music to come from the singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist since the release of her debut EP Songs For My Therapist. Currently based in Santa Ana — which is also where the music video for the new song was filmed — you’ll want to keep an eye out for any upcoming shows by Coyle and her band.
“Dreamkiller” arrives as Coyle’s most sublime blend of dream folk and indie rock yet. From the enchanting glow of its opening riff to the gauzy vocal harmonies that ebb and flow throughout. Recorded in the otherworldly mountains of Idyllwild, the song wrangles playfully with complicated and co-dependent relationship that we can sometimes develop with our anxieties and doubts.
“Dreamkiller you never leave my mind / Hold me back a little longer,” Coyle sings with lambent urgency. “My biggest fear is time / Drinking the elixir / I can blame it all on you.” Enveloped by its synth-hued atmopsherics and the dually haunting but soaring glimmer — “Dreamkiller” captures all the lucid bittersweetness of self-reflection that Coyle’s music embodies.

The music video for “Dreamkiller,” directed by Sarah Vargas and Michael Klein, with editing by Justin Green, shares a story that encompasses the song’s tug-of-war between one’s fears and aspirations. One that finds Coyle accompanied on a night out with her friends by a hipply dressed skeleton — the titular “Dreamkiller.”
A beautifully pensive and cinematic film, the group enjoys a round of cards and karaoke with the eerie presence of the skeleton. Yet as the evening continues a certain hesitant fondness starts to take shape. As night turns to day, Coyle and the group head into the sunny hills to bury their dear companion, their stark black garbs a sign of their mourning — but also the bleak necessity of laying to rest one’s fears.
