It’s time to vibe to another delectable jam from Jarina De Marco with the release of her latest single “Monumento.” After the drop of her paradisial love letter to the Dominican Republic Caribbean All-Inclusive Luxury in September, she’s effectively blown up — just like we knew she would.
With her music now reaching the eyes and ears of thousands of people, De Marco has been using her platform to humorously educate fans on Dominican Spanish, as well as featuring Taino Dominican singer-songwriter and activist Irka Mateo (a.k.a. her mother) on several videos as well.
The posts range from wholesome exchanges between De Marco and her mom to sobering recollections of her parents’ past. In one video, she elaborates on their blacklisting over criticisms of Dominican President Joaquín Balaguer. Their song “Faro a Colon” objected to the construction of a monument to Christopher Columbus, as well as the government’s priority toward preserving a legacy of violent colonization over the well-being of its people.
De Marco’s new single “Monumento” hones in on a different kind of memorial that De Marco dedicates to a genuinely alluring love interest. Joining her is rising Dominican artist Calacote, who lends his suave bars to the track’s soulful pop hooks. “Agárrate n asiento / Empecemos lento / Tu me tiene enrolado,” he raps alongside its hypnotic gyrations. “Y no se como decirte / Yo estoy enamorado.”
Together, they weave a vivacious and sultry homage to the intoxicating joy that takes over when you’re with the person you’re enamored by. “Monumento” also bears De Marco’s flair for melding together a variety of styles into a single irresistible melody, layering an electronic effervescence over its curling rhythms and sauntering beats.
