It’s been over a year since we last heard from LA-based indie duo Joy Downer. Besides the 2022 single “Chain Reaction,” which featured Beck after their appearance on The Late Late Show with James Corden, Joy Bishop hasn’t dropped much since the release of her full-length debut, Paper Moon. However, they’re back to say yes, they’re still around, and yes, they’re doing alright.

Joy Downer’s newest single, appropriately titled “Alright,” shows the singer-songwriter hasn’t faltered in the slightest through the song’s mellow drums and steady basslines.

“Alright” benefits from the simplistic production as it preaches an optimistic viewpoint made even more reassuring by the vocals. Bishop, as per usual, sings tenderly over production that feels tailor-made for her. Uniquely, the lyrics don’t find any resolution to the uncertainty of life or wallow in any sadness. Instead, Bishop looks past the complicated problems in the present and simply yet confidently declares, “It’s alright with me,” a reassuring statement serving as a reminder that it’s okay if you’re still figuring things out.

In true DIY fashion, “Alright” was joined by country and summer camp-inspired promo footage leading up to the single’s release. Although not a full-on music video, the visuals are aptly short, made sweet by Bishop dancing around in what looks to be a good time.

As independent artists, both Bishop and her husband Jeffrey Downer, who makes up one-half of their duo, are more than familiar with waiting. But they’re okay with that and are willing to “wait another decade,” as the song mentions. To their credit, they’ve done fantastic for themselves in their musical endeavors that continue to enamor.

“It’s alright to feel lost. It’s alright to take bold steps. It’s alright to go after that dream you’ve had. It’s alright to find yourself again and again,” said Downer. “And this song is me reassuring us that it’s alright.”
