Marika Hackman has divulged another poignant vision of her forthcoming new album Big Sigh with new single “Slime.” The U.K. singer/songwriter is also gearing up for a slew of 2024 tour dates across England and Europe, starting with a series of intimate acoustic sets in celebration of the record’s release on January 12th via Chrysalis Records. The follow-up to 2019’s Any Human Friend her fourth studio album will arrive as a cathartic release of the creative and emotional stagnation she experienced throughout the pandemic.
With “Slime” Hackman offers a beguiling vision of the beginnings of a relationship — uncovering all the fiery and tumultuous passion that erupts between two people in the throes of love and lust. Unlike the record’s previous singles “No Caffeine” and “Hanging,” the new song doesn’t withhold for very long its surging melody.
“Stranger, I wanna rearrange you,” Hackman murmurs at the start, her words bobbing alongside a gloomy groan of guitars. “Climb your spine and shake your mind / Slide back and feel your bones crack.” But then in slices a strident call of strings followed by the ethereal twinkle of piano keys — every ghostly ardent tone mirroring the song’s desirous fervor.

“It’s a reflection of the destruction that can be caused when you get together with someone and there are other factors at play,” she explained. “On the one hand you have a new thing that’s really exciting and hot and lusty but there can also be a lot of storm clouds floating around, a lot of fall-out socially.”
The music video for “Slime,” co-directed by Hackman and Anne-Sofie Lindgaard, is an enthralling visualization of those themes. All that ardor and mayhem is embodied in both Hackman and her co-star/choreographer Lea Anderson performance, with the former chasing the latter through a verdant forest dressed head to toe in chain mail.
As the song hits its various melodic peaks the pair crash into each other, wrestling and clamoring for dominance. With Hackman’s luminous croons growing more ecstatic the two start give into their exhaustion and the intimacy of their struggle — eventually kissing passionately in the underbrush.
