Jelani Aryeh is back with another irresistibly driving single with the release of “I’m in Love,” his first piece of new music since the release of his 2021 album I’ve Got Some Living To Do. Last year he spent some time on the road opening for Maggie Rogers on two dates of her U.S. summer tour. Now he’s back giving fans what they want: propulsive indie-rock melodics carefully and tenderly tuned to side-winding confessions of desperate love.
Tucked within the characteristically dense and gushing lyricism of Aryeh’s new song “I’m in Love” is a bittersweet need to be convinced that the love one feels is reciprocated. As the track begins you’re catapulted through thrumming riffs and the rubbery impact of drums, hurling through the tunnel vision of lovesick delusion. “It’s not the first time / This is leaving your lips,” he croons on the anxiously surging chorus. “But lie to me and say / You believe it exists.”
Tracing a fine line between earnest devotion and delusional necessity, the song finds Aryeh tumbling headfirst into fantasy in the hopes it might someday imitate reality. As he murmurs weariedly against its clamorous melody: “Just let me have this / Just let me hold on to this feeling.” Once again channeling all the frantic urgency of one’s inner yearnings into ecstatically climactic rushes.
“I’m in Love” comes with a music video directed by Silken Weinberg, starring Aryeh alongside Jack Kolbe, Trevor Zemtseff, and Stone Pellerin. One that pairs recordings of the group performing the song with a series of impressionistic images, retro-tinged and hypnotic. Framing multiple shots on a single screen, the film offers a certain visual dynamism that reflects the track’s distinct emotional multiplicity. From its poignant devotion to love’s illusory quality to its near-anthemic kick of adrenaline — the music video mirrors all those spiraling emotions with emphatic clarity.
