Adi Oasis is back with a new version of a track from her recently released album Lotus Glow, sharing two fresh reworks of her song “Serena.” One features a duet with U.K. soul singer Samm Henshaw and the other is a potent dance remix by producer Tentendo. The release comes a month before she embarks on a tour of the U.S. and Europe which will include a night at El Rey Theatre in Los Angeles on Wednesday, April 3rd.
Both iterations of “Serena” showcase the prismatic emotion elicited by the music of Oasis, offering two distinctly stirring odes to Black feminine strength. The first finds her joined by Henshaw whose svelte velvety croons illuminate the song’s already warm melodics. Together they share its uplifting lyricism, two soaring voices radiating with earnest pride and exigent praise, exulting the boundaries shattered by the song’s eponymous trailblazer.
Like the original, a tangle of sublime instrumentals unfurl themselves with just a hint of suave funk. With both Oasis and Henshaw drifting amidst its weightlessly euphoric melody. As soul-caressing horns and a poignant twinkle of keys fill the spaces between their voices with dreamy emotion.
Offering a twist on that enchanting energy is a remix of “Serena” created by Tentendo — effectively transforming the track into a bass-thrumming dancehall hit. One that contorts Oasis’ vocals into ebulliently spiraling cries of ecstasy threaded between the buoyant impact of rubbery beats and airy woodwinds.
“Serena Williams is one of my all-time heroes, and one of the most important figures of our time,” Oasis explained. “Because my album talks a lot about being a Black woman, I wanted to honor Serena as a role model for Black female resilience and grace. She pushed boundaries and broke racial barriers, often paying a heavy price in the process. And yet she rose above it and showed us all what she was made of, paving the way for millions of Black girls with big dreams.”
