Alongside the release of her new single “What’s Love” (feat. MUNA) comes the announcement that Empress Of will release her fourth album For Your Your Consideration on March 22nd via Giant Music. She will also be taking the record on a short tour around North America with a stop at The Roxy in Los Angeles on Friday, June 7th.
Like previous offerings “Femenine” and “Kiss Me” (feat. Rina Sawayama) her latest comes equipped with an alluring melody that’s difficult to disenchant. Its spacious soundscape resounds with the glimmer of synths and galloped beats — their bittersweet glow amplifying the euphonious vocals of Empress Of. Her earnest words grasp at love’s meaning and reckoning with the molding power of heartache: “If love can’t make you / Break you / Shape you / Then what’s love.”
Joining her on the track is the Los Angeles trio MUNA — Katie Gavin, Josette Maskin, and Naomi McPherson — lending it their singular talent for searing emotional clarity. Together the quartet layers each refulgent voice over the other to create a decidedly and earnestly triumphant affirmation that a broken heart is a crucial part of understanding love. As they coo lucidly just before the chorus: “I’m not the same and I don’t wish I was.”
