Shannon & The Clams find themselves reeling from cosmic grief on the lead single and title track for their new album The Moon Is In The Wrong Place, out on May 10 via Easy Eye Sound. They’ll also be heading out on a North American tour with dates at The Wiltern in Los Angeles on October 3rd and The Observatory North Park in San Diego on October 4th.

Produced by Dan Auerbach (The Black Keysg), the record finds Shannon & The Clams launching into a raw but honest confrontation with the death of a loved one. Together Shannon Shaw (singer/frontwoman), Cody Blanchard (guitarist), Will Sprott (keyboardist), and Nate Mahan (drummer) navigate their shared anguish with a fiercely poignant shift in sound.

Its first single “The Moon Is In The Wrong Place” gives voice to the surreality that seems to veil the world in the aftermath of a cataclysmic loss. The title itself alludes to a conversation that Shaw had with her fiancé Joe Haener before he suddenly passed away, his words becoming a haunting portent of their emotional devastation.

Still steeped in vintage rock and swooning rhythms, the song carries the heft of their sorrow, darkening every rollicking texture. “The sun burned down when you left this world,” Shaw wails surrounded by an eruption of singed guitars, frantic percussion, and the eerie tones of an omnichord. “Now there is some imposter in the sky / Look for you in starlight, eyeballs searching skies for satellites.” Her words envision all the ominous transformations that now warp reality.

“The Moon Is In The Wrong Place” also comes with a music video directed by Bobbi Rich that plays out with the same delightfully bizarre visuals as a campy sci-fi film. One that follows Shannon & The Clams as they embrace the strangeness with their whacky costumes. From space-faring aliens wearing silver spacesuits and freaky mimes in white-face paint to lobsters jamming underwater.

“We all felt the urgency of making something that reckoned with this meteor that smashed into our planet,” Sprott says. “This is the most focused record we’ve ever done, as far as everything coming from a singular traumatic event”
