In contrast to their alien-inspired hype single “UFHO,” released at the end of last year, LA-based rap duo Flyana Boss are switching up styles and falling head over heels on their latest single, “Candyman.” Arriving just in time for Valentine’s Day and their first headlining tour that includes an LA date at The Echoplex on March 28, the song is best friends Bobbi and Folayan’s way of telling the world “we’re true lover girls at heart and ‘Candyman’ is for all the sweethearts out there.”

While 2023 saw the two open up for Janelle Monáe’s The Age of Pleasure Tour and make surprise appearances on Ke$ha’s tour, the next few months will see them on their first headlining tour, beginning in Chicago on Feb. 24 and concluding with a date in LA on March 28 at The Echoplex.

“Candyman” is Flyana Boss at their sweetest, trading verses filled with enough candy double entendres to fuel Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory. The simple bubblegum trap beat never takes away from Bobbi or Folayan’s flows, providing a solid foundation for their sugar rush. Unsurprisingly, their personalities are the main draw of the song, serving as further proof of their penchant for pop-leaning rap.

The chorus takes after previous singles, ranking among their catchiest and maintaining the levity of “Candyman.” It also speaks for the two’s playfulness, who sound as though they’re having fun with the inventive sexual innuendos. While the song is relatively short, something that’s commonplace in Flyana Boss’ catalog so far, it leaves a sweet aftertaste that’s enough of a treat to hold off fans before the start of their tour.

ARTISTS YOU SHOULD KNOW

BEST NEW MUSIC

In the same spirit as their name, the cover art pays homage to Perfect Angel by Minnie Riperton, who’s seemingly an influence on them. Their music can certainly lead to comparisons with other similar artists, especially those of years past. But the way they remix those reference points and infuse their touch into each single released so far is what continues to prove their winning formula.
