Julia Holter “Sun Girl”
As the first song on Julia Holter‘s newest album Something in the Room She Moves, the vaporous and breathy movements of “Sun Girl” draw you in with their tender warmth. Replete with spoken word fragments that daydream over the arrival of radiant feelings personified, the track is a soft-spoken meditation that envelops you with its instrumentation, from flutes and bagpipes to a spellbinding mellotron.
With playful innocence, it explores the Los Angeles singer/songwriter’s desire to be “brought out of [her] comfort zone — into the unknown, playfulness and chaos.” The accompanying music video created by animator Tammy Nguyễn does just that, following the misadventures of a perpetually sad claymation figure as they observe the stunning transformations sunlight has on the landscape and soul.
Something in the Room She Moves is available on all streaming platforms. See Julia Holter at El Rey Theatre in Los Angeles on May 3rd.

Gossip “Give It Up For Love”
Pretty much every track from Gossip’s new record Real Power is an uninhibited banger. Yet special consideration is owed to “Give It Up For Love,” injecting an explosion of fiery passion about halfway through the album’s romping salute to the strength of romantic and platonic affection. It also stands as one of the more potent meldings of jaunty rock and euphoric disco that gushes from the collection. As Beth Ditto takes the reigns — flanked by funky percussion and frenetic riffs — she delivers an excitedly urgent plea to surrender to its power.
Real Power is out now on all streaming platforms. Catch Gossip live at Just Like Heaven this May in Pasadena, CA.

Glass Beams “Black Sand”
Melbourne-based Glass Beams just put out a new EP with the release of Mahal — all five tracks are a beguiling example of their ability to splice together Indian classical and pop traditions with psychedelic wonder — but its outro piece “Black Sand” is the sublime cherry on top. Against warbling tones and textures, the trio interweaves mesmeric guitar lines, resonant strings, and ethereal vocals with intoxicating effects. Both tranquilizing and emotionally invigorating the song underscores the affecting role the band’s instrumentals play in their mesmeric creations.
Mahal is out now on all streaming platforms.
