Sans Soucis will drop their hotly-anticipated debut album on Circumnavigating Georgia this year, sharing a taste of the new project with its intoxicating lead single “Sexed & Sexual.” The Italian-born but London-based artist will also depart this summer for a tour of the U.K. and Europe.
With simmering bravado “Sexed & Sexual” confronts the complicated tangle of hyper-sexualization and liberation that define one’s teenage years. Driven by a pulsating bassline, Soucis muses candidly over messy moments that once stirred feelings of regret.
“I didn’t know how to live my teenage,” Soucis confesses against the dribble of beats. “And now that it’s not a cosplay / Tell me what I was / When I was your bae.” Their questions pointedly prodding at an ex-lover who offered them a superficial and token love based solely on sex: “An exotic / flower / Your trophy for two hours.”
Yet the track’s fiercely buoyant energy and thrumming anthemics reject such guilt, with Soucis choosing instead to recognize their youth for what it was: an unguided embrace of needs originating from a side of themselves they’d yet to explore. “Maybe what I needed was the time to be / Sexed and sexual,” they assert as the bass jumps back in, punctuating newfound confidence in the needs and satisfactions of their sensuality.
“When I was a teenager, I overlooked situations that I shouldn’t have been involved in,” Soucis explained. “I don’t blame myself for it. That’s why I really wanted to explore all of these aspects. The album was kind of exercising my guilt and actually being like, ‘Listen, it is what it is. It happened the way it happened and it’s not my fault.'”
“Sexed & Sexual” is completed by a music video directed by C.T. Robert and filmed in Mexico. It ultimately captures the sweltering intimacy and individual empowerment espoused by the track, following Soucis as they entangle their body in a crowd of other people, losing themselves in the euphoria of finally having the space and time to comfortably celebrate their sexual being.
