Before she takes off on her tour across the Americas, which includes an LA date at The Regent Theater on June 19, French singer-songwriter Pomme has dug up “weird” from her archives, giving fans a treat on top of the release of her latest album, Saisons.

Claire Pommet, who goes by the French word for apple, hasn’t slowed since dropping her debut album À peu près in 2017. Releasing a new project nearly every year, with Saisons having dropped this past March, she’s established an international following quickly and garnered millions of streams across her four albums.

In the case of “weird,” the fittingly titled song comes from the weird stage in the pandemic when everyone was uncertain how long they would have to stay inside. During that time, Pomme quietly put out quarantine phone sessions, where “weird” first appeared and was plucked from.

Appropriate to the time, the stripped-back acoustic guitar opens the track on a gentle note, serving as a cathartic yet relatable exercise for Pommet. Aside from being sung in English despite most of her songs being in French, what distinguishes “weird” is how matter-of-fact lyrics are, getting across that uncertainty brought about by the pandemic. While it is a relatively simple track, it fits right alongside her Chanson songwriting and production style, exemplified by the pleasant piano on her biggest song, “Ceux qui rêvent.”

Saisons alone came with a wealth of new material from Pommet, including a teaser for three short films that will drop as one in July. Directed by Hugo Pillard, Nina Richard, and Pommet herself, the short films coincide with the album’s theme of seasons passing. Each one depicts winter, spring, and autumn. Saisons, le film: printemps, the short for spring, oddly coincides with the lyrics on “weird,” which optimistically looks to spring and creates a dialogue between her work.

“It was a way for me to stay creative and write really short, simple, descriptive songs that helped me go through this weird time,” said Pommet on the song’s creation. “I wanted to give it to you all as a tiny gift, I’m so grateful and excited for this tour.”
