Las Nubes
Las Nubes by Sal Rispoli

Las Nubes “Pesada”

The fourth single to be sampled from Las Nubes‘ new album Tormentas Malsanas arrives on a roaring wave of fuzzily anthemic rock. “Pesada” (which fittingly translates to “heavy”) begins with the caustic electric drone that — like the fuse for some bombastic detonation — sizzles in frantic anticipation of the incoming pyrotechnics.

With the drop of two concussive haymakers, you’re engulfed in a conflagration of riffs as Ale Campos and Emile Milgram share a scorching takedown of vainglorious and chronically online activism. “Who are you showing up for? / Is it for change or attention?” the pair wail. “How does dissent look on you? / When you act on convenience?” The flurry of raptly shrieking guitars and percussive pummelings that follow imparts a daunting emphasis on their words.

The band elaborated on the track’s origins: “During the time of George Floyd’s murder, I noticed several people who I followed online were posting non-stop about topics surrounding racial injustice in the US. What I found strange was that they would share infographics written by other people instead of forming their own opinions, while also demonizing those who didn’t post as much as them. Additionally, when I would go to protests, I expected to see them all there but when the time came none of them showed. ‘Pesada’ is about performative activism and the convenience of sitting at home and clicking ‘add to story’ — how the delusion created by attention makes you think you’re absolved from being labeled as a bad character.”

Tormentas Malsanas the new album from Las Nubes arrives on June 14th via Sweet Records.

Babe Rainbow by Maclay Heriot

Babe Rainbow “Retrograde”

Babe Rainbow rolls out their first single of the year “Retrograde” just in time for summer, channeling their waxy stoner-pop into a lackadaisical but buoyant melody. You couldn’t ask for a more heartwarmingly sublime daydream of winding rhythms and sunny harmonies. Where warbled youthful stirrings and woozy pinings are imbued with propulsive urgency by the track’s dutifully rubbery backbeat. Pair it with blue waters and a palm tree canopy and drift right on through its paradisal yearning.

Jordana “My Idol” feat. Paul Cherry

Jordana pens a swooning and slightly snarky cautionary tale on her new single “My Idol” (feat. Paul Cherry). Against the dreamy luster of ebullient acoustics comes the advice that it’s best to leave the people we’ve placed on pedestals exactly where they are, resisting the urge to climb up there to meet them. Especially when that means risking having your preconceptions shattered and adoration of them irrevocably marred: “Sometimes it hurts to get the thing you desire / What if it’s all just a lie?” Although the song warns listeners about the disenchantment that occurs when you meet your idols, that’s exactly how the collaboration between the two fell into place.

“I really love this song,” Jordana said via Instagram. “Paul and I wrote it in 2022 when we first ever worked together. I was a superfan (still am) and was so intimidated by him because of how much I look up to him as an artist (guy not so much). But the more I got to know him the more awesome he got. He was suuuuch a dick that first time. That’s actually what this song is about! Don’t befriend your idols! They only let you down. Anyway, he is now someone I call a best friend!”
