On his new single, “BLAME,” singer/songwriter Geoff Eido shares a soaring anthem that attempts to wrest people out of a tendency toward self-victimization. The California-based artist’s first new song this year teases the uplifting but pointedly honest tone of his forthcoming album, ORDINARY NIGHT.
Like some of his previous singles, “BLAME” targets a personal flaw, in this case, the need to place all the responsibility on scapegoats instead of oneself, expanding it into a powerfully universal message to be taken to heart. Propelled by the urgent buoyancy of its percussive and acoustic rhythms, Eido’s bellowed words arrive with preachy pretension. Crescendoing from a confrontation with oneself into an energizing reminder of just how liberating and revelatory being honest with yourself can be.
“I wanted to convey my own angst and frustration about living in a world where most of us are blaming everyone else for our own problems,” Eido said of the single. “But there’s no power in that. There’s only power in taking responsibility for everything in my life and looking at how it is that I can create it in a way that is powerful and beneficial to those around me.”
Carried by the robust ebullience of its folk-pop melody the song showcases the invigorating potency of Eido’s songwriting. “Sorry to see my enemies screamin’ I am the victim / Pretendin’ the world pinned them down with no other option,” he wails against the song’s thunderous gallops. “Knowledge goes where wisdom flows at the end of the mirror / In those eyes the secret lies at the source of the trigger.”
The music video for “BLAME” centers around a familiar story: an angry and frustrated man takes no responsibility, choosing to blame and fight everyone around them, losing their self-worth and family in the process. Yet, like the song, the film tries to offer some small hope. Ending with the possibility of reconciliation but only if we dare to take radical responsibility for the things we can control. Breaking the cycle of evasive blame and entitlement in the process.
