San Jose-raised rapper Terror Reid is set to drop MANIFESTO, an album that’s sure to raise hell by the sound of his recent single, “NOD YA HEAD!” Like the exclamation mark in the title, the track is in your face from the get-go, unleashing countless one-liners in less than two minutes. Terror Reid will take his new album on tour this October, with Southern California shows in LA at the Echoplex on Oct. 2, San Diego at House of Blues on Nov. 15, and the Constellation Room in Santa Ana on Nov. 16. Additional tour dates will take him through various cities across the U.S.
When Terror Reid started making music in the early 2010s as DJ Getter, he had yet to commit to rap as a career. However, he proved himself a capable rapper early on through singles like 2017’s “Uppercuts,” an impressive first track that brought Cypress Hill energy to the present day, while working with similar artists such as $uicideboy$ and Pouya. He also established a specific style that differs from just about every other hip-hop artist, embracing the macabre in his lyrics and visuals.
Many singles and EPs later, Reid is set to release MANIFESTO, his new album, out Sept. 20. Much like previous material, he co-produced the album and is sticking to what he does best: delivering nonstop flows over jumpy beats designed to get heads bobbing.
Reid, who always possessed a gift for flows on unorthodox beats, at least in comparison to other hip-hop acts, ensures he’s the main attraction. The chorus, in particular, sticks to your head like a bomb waiting to go off between the verses. Despite boasting a shorter runtime, Reid, perhaps most impressively, packs a punch every passing second, rapping at a pace that’s fast enough to make other MCs envious.
The music video for “NOD YA HEAD!” carries over the same out-there visuals present in several other videos, featuring Reid in the demonic equivalent of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. The unabashed gore and zaniness of the mental hospital, complete with crash zooms and sudden sideswipes, recall prime Eminem. Things only get weirder as Reid finds himself against a hypnotic spiral as if turning the tables on the viewer, a welcomed detour into the unhinged.
On top of rapping, Reid is also a DJ, actor, creative director, and producer who knows how to tie his talents into his music. Whether it’s the aforementioned twisted visuals of his music videos, the bold cover art of his singles, or starring in the satire series The Real Bros of Simi Valley, Reid knows how to make his presence known anywhere.
