Hot off a contribution to the “I Saw the TV Glow” soundtrack last year, Singaporean producer/songwriter yeule is gearing up for another eventful year with “Skullcrusher” off their forthcoming album, Evangelic Girl is a Gun, out May 30 via Ninja Tune. Atop nebulous production dotted by metallic crunches that couldn’t be any more industrial, the track serves as yeule’s equivalent to Massive Attack’s “Angel.” Similar to that song, the glitchy build-up reflects its predecessor’s escalation while finding yeule looking inward in what quickly becomes a portrait of self-destruction.

However, rather than collapsing or losing momentum, “Skullcrusher” brings in roaring guitars so thick in tone that you can feel the weight simply by listening to the single. Although coming in just over two minutes, yeule expertly uses distortion and takes it to the breaking point, bordering on an abrasive quality that still comes off as refined. The final product reflects that balance, speaking to how they’re able to pack a punch in a relatively short amount of time.
