Since her whirlwind album, GOOD LUCK, producer/singer-songwriter DEBBY FRIDAY, has put herself at the forefront of dance music, and her latest single, out via Sub Pop, continues to push the limits. “1/17,” a nebulous build-up well worth its gradual rise in intensity, looks at the highs and lows of her career thus far, whether it’s winning awards or playing to an empty audience. The bubbling synths heard throughout are the sort of sonic textures you’d probably hear from a breakthrough 90s/00s artist like Alice Deejay.

However, what distinguishes DEBBY FRIDAY from those likely inspirations is how she looks inward, choosing to take her time on “1/17” rather than tear the house down with a straight rager–something she’s proven to be good at. While the switch-up is something not common for electronic artists like her, especially not at a relatively early stage in their career, it does go to show her maturity and the level of growth she’s reached thus far. Although there is no word on a follow-up album just yet, expect something out of this world yet again.
