While Chicano Batman’s indefinite hiatus marked the end of an era for some of L.A.’s leading artists, that doesn’t mean its members are stopping, as evident by former lead vocalist Bardo’s newest single featuring Combo Chimbita, “Renacer.” Having previously established his solo career over at Stones Throw, Bardo pushes further into a dance-funk direction that his former band only flirted with.

His familiar vocals complement the inspired production, which seems to pull as much from Latin genres as the danceable 70s and 80s. Combo Chimbita also finds a way to momentarily steal the show, riding over the gleaming guitar licks and the sudden shockwave heard at the halfway point. Fitting to the title, which means “rebirth” in English, Bardo finds himself trying out sounds that seem to come naturally to him based on how easily he takes on each style. Above all else, he and Combo Chimbita have crafted an explosive cocktail of a song that carefully shakes its ingredients together for a good time.
