With her new album, Beneath The Lilypad, out May 16 via RCA Records, singer-songwriter Alexandra Savior continues her seamless transition despite a five-year hiatus on “The Mothership.” Coming off of her third studio album, the single is part of a broader narrative tracking a period when she faced big questions about her artistic identity.
Any doubt about her comeback is quickly put to rest by the first few notes of “The Mothership,” where the brooding guitar and percussion courtesy of producer Drew Erickson (Lana Del Rey) put the listener into a daze. Coming in at a little over three minutes, Savior wastes no time describing how she hopes “She beams me up right up next to you” in a Rapture-like event where the world is ending.
Despite the song’s relatively straightforward message – with Savior insisting all she needs is the thrill her partner brings out of her – the decision to place it against the apocalypse distinguishes it from a typical love song. It also boosts the slow, psychedelic pace of “The Mothership,” highlighting how little she could care about the world falling apart; a statement in itself that captures the current moment.
