The Drums were euphoric at Just Like Heaven. Even 15 years later, Jonathan Pierce’s voice and stage presence were so infectious and joy-inducing. Hearing “Let’s Go Surfing” live was full of emotion, as I personally have many fun memories associated with this song and much of their early catalog, which soundtracked the early days of Grimy Goods — when we covered garage and punk shows in East Hollywood nearly seven days a week.

I think that’s what’s so special to us millennials about Just Like Heaven. The music we hear at this festival holds so many core memories from our young adulthood. There’s a heartfelt camaraderie in aging with the bands you love. The same can be said for the community of indie rock and indie pop, loving humans, especially here in LA.
I walk through this festival, seeing so many familiar faces, with friends, former staff, artists, industry folks, and longtime Grimy Goods readers. We’ve all aged, yet we’re all still here attempting to wild out like we were in our 20s and early 30s again.

Let me tell you, the heat was absolutely brutal. Even hydrating constantly in between dancing and drinking. I got lightheaded several times. I got sunburned in the weirdest spots. I had to retreat to shade or air conditioning several times to catch my breath while downing electrolytes.
But it was during The Drums’ set that I finally started to level out. Maybe it was the magic of golden hour, and knowing that the sun was nearly done blasting its unforgivable heat on us. But I also think it was just the magic of The Drums and Jonathan‘s beautiful vocals and stage presence. It took me back to a time of endless fun and minimal responsibilities. It reminded me of the tight East Hollywood music community in which Grimy Goods helped cultivate back when every small club venue was independent and that was our scene. 🖤
