Delivering sugary sweetness in song form, LA-based psychedelic rock outfit The Undercover Dream Lovers creates a whirlwind of oscillating sounds and funk grooves on “deja vu.” Contrary to the name, The Undercover Dream Lovers is the solo project of artist and producer Matt Koenig, who writes, produces, and mixes nearly every song out of the project.
Since 2016, Koenig’s fusion of genres harkens back to the 2000s-2010s indie-electronic era, albeit with a pop coating that makes it all his own. “deja vu” is no different, leading a growing line of singles seemingly teasing at a bigger project that’s yet to come.
Based on the sound of the newest song, Koenig is preparing for a moment similar to 2018’s “Let Go.” Centering around the feeling of a sugar cube on his tongue to equate his infatuation, the song’s wavy production makes for the sort of engrossing listening experience courtesy of the pristine quality in the mixing.
His talents as a multi-instrumentalist are also on display, where the combination of funk, electronic, dance, and pop music comes together seamlessly in large part due to how he prevents any sonic clashing between instruments.
With The Undercover Dream Lovers as a name nearing 10 years that will hopefully culminate in a new project, Koenig is finding new ways to carve out his own path and broaden his musical arsenal.
