After a spot at this year’s Coachella and ahead of an LA date at The Paramount on Sept. 18, electronic duo Kumo 99 brings the best out of punk and breakbeat on their newest single, “Down.” The LA-based project is composed of seasoned artists Ami Komai and Nate Donmoyer, with the latter being the former drummer of Passion Pit, in addition to several producer credits.
However, none of their music that preceded Kumo 99 could have forecasted the mix of industrial production and raucous punk energy that would follow, with “Down” encapsulating their chaotic electronica which rewards listeners through repeated listens.
To say things hit the fan on “Down” would be an understatement and something that’s proven wrong by the aggressive first few seconds, where the bass practically slaps you in the face. As though the vocals were a conductor’s baton, Komai’s voice guides the controlled chaos through a constant barrage of heavy drums and synths before the song takes off.
Compared to the first half, the intensity reaches an 11 as Komai and Donmoyer fire off on all cylinders, turning “Down” into an unadulterated industrial-rave riot that should skyrocket them to the top.
Considering they have a tour lined after an already eventful year, as well as the one-two punch of “Eyesore” and now “Down,” it’s safe to say Kumo 99 is one of the latest artists in the electronic sphere that’s bound to make it big if their formula is already this refined.
