As another touring season that goes into next year approaches for him, Mac DeMarco is gearing up for the release of his sixth album, Guitar, with “Home” ahead of its Aug. 22 release via Mac’s Record Label. Additionally, Mac DeMarco will tour in support of his new album kicking off with LA shows at the Greek Theatre on August 29, 30, and 31.
Few artists could hold a candle to what DeMarco has accomplished across his past five albums, having developed a loyal following on par with some of the biggest artists in the world. But based on “Home,” DeMarco is aiming for a stripped-back sound, literally returning to his roots by relying on the guitar and reveling in its simplicity.
The same is true for the rest of the upcoming album, of which he said, “I think Guitar is as close to a true representation of where I’m at in my life today as I can manage to put to paper.”
As for “Home,” appropriately written at his house in LA, DeMarco’s soft singing reflects the maturity he developed over the course of his career. Lines like “These days I’d much rather be on my own” and “Now my welcome’s worn out, and your hate for me’s grown” dig deep into how relationships with yourself and those around you change, with the modest instrumentation letting his lyrics hit harder.
Although there was none to begin with, it comes as no surprise that new music from DeMarco leaves no doubt in his capabilities as a songwriter.
