As one of eight new songs from her latest EP, Cult Leader, Texas-raised singer-songwriter Susannah Joffe proves herself as a lyricist on “Antler Queen.” True to its title, Cult Leader is all about fanaticism and its many forms, whether that be through religion or love bordering on obsession. That idea extends to “Antler Queen,” a hypnotic track that references the cult-like figure of the same name from the Showtime series “Yellowjackets.”
Balancing indie-pop melodies with an underlying eerie atmosphere, Joffe sings a twisted tale that touches on love and obsession. “Antler Queen,” which evokes early Lana Del Rey in its sound and enigmatic lyrics, features lyrics that creep up on you against the seemingly romantic instrumentation.
The lines “I’m a dog that just won’t bite” and “I vow ‘till death do us part / To give you my skin and bones” especially cut through the otherwise enchanting production amid references to the show, falling in a space where Joffe’s storytelling is as inventive as it is personal.
With the EP serving as a formal introduction to Joffe after her song “Die Your Daughter” blew up last year, tracks like “Antler Queen” are a reminder of how she stands out as a songwriter.
And despite it being hard to forecast what’s to come following a project like Cult Leader, the only thing that’s certain is it will be easy to discern Joffe from a crowd of other emerging artists due to her music always being undeniably hers in the best way possible.
