Hot off a Glastonbury set and five months after dropping her debut studio album, Like A Ribbon, British rapper John Glacier is back with a new single in the spirit of the atmospheric, genre-bending project, “Fly With Me.”

Before Like A Ribbon dropped in February, John established a reputation for the unpredictable, in part because of her eclectic collaborations with artists like Dean Blunt, but primarily as a result of her ability to blend sonic textures ranging from post-punk to garage under a lo-fi sound.

“Fly Like Me” is no different, boasting abrasive yet hypnotic production that lets John dish out on what her life is like as of late. Similar to previous material, her deadpan delivery cuts through the crunchy bass and twisted details in the background, proving she could flow over just about any beat that’s thrown her way. However, unlike contemporaries from her native UK and overseas, John’s brand of rap is among the most idiosyncratic working right now.

Her typically woozy flow complements the inventive lyrics that sound as though they’re being strung together on the spot thanks to her stream-of-consciousness approach. From “Fly Like Me” alone, lines such as “I’m a sight to see / Not a sight for sore eyes” and “Fire in the flame / Feeling lighter than a lighter” prove just how much of a breath of fresh air John is in today’s music.
