Although his tour wrapped up not too long ago, glaive is back with “Asheville.” Known for his role in helping popularize hyperpop during the early 2020s, the North Carolina native soon found himself with a devoted following, riding on the newfound success with two back-to-back albums in 2023 and 2024.

Although he’s kept busy this year, touring in the spring in support of May It Never Falter, “Asheville” is the first new release of 2025 and finds glaive taking an introspective approach.

“Upon returning to my hometown, I had this newfound confidence mixed with a bit of shame for making ‘fuck this town’ because in the end, Asheville, NC actually is quite a nice place,” said glaive about the song, before adding, “It is strangely confusing to try to make a place new that you have known for your entire life.”

Using war and playing off the fact that his real name is Ash Gutierrez, glaive takes a stream-of-conscious approach to tackle how he felt coming back home. While there are flashes of hyperpop heard in “Asheville,” his jittery-trap sound, fueled by percussion, is a step in a new direction.

What’s most impressive is how he balances braggadocio and regret, helping put into perspective his conflicted feelings when it comes to leaving home. To put it simply, it succeeds in capturing that feeling when what was once your home doesn’t feel like home anymore, while also showing how glaive has grown as an artist.
