When it comes to songwriters, few artists or bands compare to Big Thief, as evidenced by their newest singles “Los Angeles” and “Grandmother” off their upcoming album, Double Infinity, out Sept. 5 via 4AD. In support of the new album, they’ll be touring throughout the year, with an LA stop at the Hollywood Bowl on Sept. 27.
Unsurprisingly, their singles released thus far point to another strong project following 2022’s Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe In You and a sudden influx of new fans thanks to “Vampire Empire” and other tracks gaining traction online.
“Los Angeles” is perhaps the single where the band’s live recording approach to the new album is most evident. The crisp quality in the instrumentation helps drive home how impactful lead singer Adrianne Lenker’s vocals are, which are in top shape as usual.
However, it’s her songwriting that hits the hardest, where her detailing about someone she knew in Los Angeles strikes for how ultra-personal they come across. “Feels like it’s been ten years / Two years feels like forever” are just a select few lyrics that help listeners enter Lenker’s mind and relate, despite how specific each line is.
The other single, “Grandmother,” which uniquely has a feature in the form of multi-instrumentalist Laraaji, marks the first time all three members contributed to writing a single track. The jangly guitar drives forward the ensemble of diverse instruments, ranging from percussion to wind chime-like synths.
In addition to Laraaji’s vocals that nicely contrast Lenker and her distinct voice, the song is one of their most stylistically different, pushing the band forward in a way that’s indicative of what they hope – and are likely – to achieve on Double Infinity.
