Despite both being on the heels of recent singles and collaborations, labelmates Torii Wolf and Nyck Caution are teaming up for their new single, “Divine,” out via Epidemic Sound.

Less than a month ago, Torii unveiled their latest EP, Better Off, which reaffirmed their grip on atmospheric electronic music with an experimental edge. Nyck, who is also signed to Epidemic Sound, is similarly keeping busy through his solo material separate from his work with rap group Pro Era.

Although the two come from different corners of music, “Divine” finds Torii and Nyck fusing their sounds to create a hybrid between trance-esque trip-hop and mellow yet self-assured hip-hop.

From the get-go, Torii, whose vocals evoke the same feels as Beth Gibbons of Portishead, sets the tone for the track’s update of ‘90s genres made modern by the sleek production. Nyck similarly understands the assignment, coming in with a calm flow that complements the lavish instrumentation ranging from a booming bass to soft piano keys dotted in the background.

However, rather than limit “Divine,” the two let the track build up throughout the runtime, where the once soothing production bursts in moments of catharsis. The switch-up is made apparent in the second half as Torii and Nyck bring more heat to their contributions now that the instrumental is expanding in sound and moving past genre classification.

By the end, it’s no wonder why the two artists collaborated, especially when their sounds come together like a natural chain reaction instead of anything feeling forced.
