Their career thus far

You’d be hard-pressed to find a band from recent memory with the critical praise and cult following that Big Thief has going for them. Ever since their 2016 debut album, the aptly titled Masterpiece, the three-piece has been on a streak for the past nine years.

From the beginning, they found a winning formula with the combination of lead vocalist Adrianne Lenker’s top-tier songwriting – whose work may lead her to become one of the best of her generation – wide-emotional spectrum within their tracklists, and crisp recording quality so clear, it makes you feel like you’re in the same room as them during their recording sessions.

Safe to say, their debut wasn’t a fluke. 2017’s Capacity would follow, again reaffirming the band’s grip on indie rock, folk, and the singer-songwriter genre, among other styles. Six albums later, and there are no signs of their quality waning any time soon.

Bigger than ever

While some bands don’t receive the love and attention they deserve during their initial run, Big Thief finds itself in a unique position where the flowers come and show no signs of stopping. Alongside Lenker’s solo material suddenly getting traction thanks to platforms like TikTok, online crowds have uplifted Big Thief to a level not previously seen for a band beloved by critics and devoted fans.

Around the release of their previous album, Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe In You, songs such as “Velvet Ring” and “Paul” garnered new listeners, introducing waves upon waves of fans digesting the rest of their catalog. From there, singles like “Vampire Empire” would further boost Big Thief’s popularity for how the band could dig deep into complicated emotions that stabbed you in the heart before putting it back together.

Since their explosion, the anticipation for a new Big Thief project couldn’t be higher. Rightfully so, considering they’re among the most consistent bands working today. And with Lenker’s 2024 album, Bright Future, attracting even more attention to Big Thief at large, there’s a lot to look forward to.

Skilled songwriters across the board

Lenker and the rest of Big Thief’s lineup aren’t the only songwriters who’ve proven themselves time and time again. In similar respects, Noname has enjoyed a reputation for being one of the most skilled lyricists of her generation, having separated herself from other up-and-coming rappers for her poetic, stream-of-consciousness approach.

After several guest verses for fellow Chicago emcees like Chance the Rapper, Noname made her full-length debut in 2016 with Telefone, a shining example of how hip-hop deserves to be digested as poetry for the project’s intricate wordplay and smooth head-bops. Tracks such as “Shadow Man” especially solidified her aptitude for spinning poetry in just about every song she releases.

Noname’s later albums, Room 25 and Sundial, would again show her talents. At the same time, she would become equally known for her book club, garnering thousands of followers across several social media platforms. It’s also expanded to multiple sub-clubs spanning Chicago, other U.S. cities, and four international chapters. For a rapper whose sound stands in contrast to other artists, Noname has continually carved a tried and true path for herself.

Getting the most out of the Hollywood Bowl

Artists like Big Thief and Noname don’t come by often, which is why you’ll want to be in attendance for the entirety of their sets. Ahead of their show at the Hollywood Bowl, there are a couple of ways to ensure your time at the venue is the best it can be.

Since the concert lands on a Saturday, you’ll have a bit of wiggle room on your way to the Bowl. Still, it’s best to arrive around 6:00 PM, when the gates open. However, no worries if you come closer to 6:30 PM, as there’s plenty of time for you to settle down before the show starts at 8:00 PM.

In case you’re unsure of what travel option is the best, you’ll be glad to know the Bowl has a few alternatives. As outlined here, options including shuttles and nearby parking are available if you’re hoping to beat any potential traffic that may arise.

Whether you plan on eating and drinking at the Bowl, you’ll be relieved to know outside drinks and food are allowed, given they’re within the rules. If not, there are plenty of options at the Plaza Marketplace and surrounding concessions that you can stock up on before the concert.

Big Thief’s concert is just one of many upcoming shows at the Hollywood Bowl that may interest you. If you’re looking for a good time that’s stylistically different, Bomba Estéreo and Rawayana come together as Astropical on Sept. 7. Perfect Angel: The Definitive Minnie Riperton Tribute will take the stage on September 4, featuring an all-star collection of special guests.
