With an upcoming project, Cartoon Radio, on the way, rapper and poet Noname is making her return known with the new single, “Hundred Acres,” featuring Devin Morrison.

Noname, perhaps equally known for her book club that now spans 38 cities worldwide, is the sort of lyricist who your favorite rapper looks up to. Across her three albums released thus far, she’s made consistency something that comes naturally to her, with “Hundred Acres” and the rest of Cartoon Radio looking to continue that trend.

The track, which comes alongside Noname’s first official music video, quickly distinguishes itself from the soulful jazz production for which Noname is best known. The rustic piano heard throughout allows the rapper to take on a more bouncy and carefree flow, packing dense lyrics while throwing in one-liners that add levity to the song.

Of course, it comes as no surprise that the most standout aspect of “Hundred Acres” is the songwriting. Some of the many memorable lines include “Princess Tiana in Bahamas / On a beach like fuck a sauna” and “Animated like a black cookout / Wit’ Johnny Bravo, he the white lookout.”

In the nearly 10 years since the release of Noname’s debut album, Telefone, no contemporary comes close to the emcee in terms of quality and critical acclaim. Considering the same is likely to be true for Cartoon Radio based on “Hundred Acres,” which doubles as a switch-up for Noname, few other artists could measure up to her.
